A panel of three federal judges struck down Alabama’s second attempt to draw up a congressional map. This came after Republican lawmakers refused to create a majority-black second district, despite a Supreme Court mandate.
A special teacher will now be appointed to draw up the districts. Ultimately, the case is expected to return to the Supreme Court.
Atlanta prosecutors today unsealed and charged 61 people with extortion after two years of protests against a training center for police and firefighters. Activists call it Cop City and say it would militarize the police. Prosecutors call them militant anarchists who burned equipment and threatened officials.
Republican Attorney General Chris Carr said it was a criminal enterprise.
